General FAQ Info
----------------

N means new, U means updated

1.1 How is the FAQ laid out?

This FAQ is laid out just like older versions of the Hack FAQ - simplest and easiest
stuff first, gradually becoming more complex as each major operating system is
covered. It is roughly intended to educate someone new to hacking, and get them up
to speed. It will not "teach hacking". It simply explains things, how they work,
and how they can be circumvented. Administrators of LAN systems will note that while
the perspective is from that of the intruder, there is plenty of material that
explain how to close the holes as well.

References are cited when the topic at hand can not be covered in detail in this
forum. Before you ask for details of me, check out the references first.

1.2 How do I add to this FAQ?

Send a message to faq@nmrc.org with your submission. Provide as much technical detail
as possible, including version numbers, etc. Note whether you wish to be listed as a
contributor or not. Anonymous submissions are ok, and PGP is encouraged. Use Simple
Nomad's public key available from several key servers or from the NMRC web site at
http://www.nmrc.org/contact/nomadpubkey.html.

1.3 How is this FAQ prepared?

The FAQ itself is being written in a simple text editor. Earlier versions of the
Hack FAQ used a customized sgml setup to spit out web pages, postscript, and rtf
files. We now have returned to our roots - the humble text file. Just like in the
good old BBS days!

Items included in the FAQ include submissions, results from lab work at NMRC, culling
from other public sources such as published papers, faqs, web sites, security
advisories, etc. If we receive a submission to the FAQ and cannot get the exploit
to work, we will probably still include it with a disclaimer that it didn't work for
us (unless it is lame, then we probably won't use it). We usually try to test this
stuff out unless we consider the source trusted, such as a respected researcher or
bug hunter who has previously posted good info.

1.4 Where can I get the latest copy of the FAQ?

There are dozens and dozens of web sites that have copies of various FAQs written by
Simple Nomad, all with different versions. However there is only one official place
to get it:

http://www.nmrc.org/faqs/

Other places that keep current copies, including PacketStorm or Technotronic, are
good secondary resources as they continually update their files.
